- The Nelson Mandela Foundation's Unit for Rural Schooling and Development (Eastern Cape, South Africa)
The Unit was established to enable the rural schools established by Mr Mandela to find solutions to the many intractable problems facing schools in impoverished rural communities, and to transform themselves into hubs of learning and development. Keystone and the Unit set out together to identify the key enablers of success in relation to the Unit’s mission. Keystone facilitated a reflective learning process involving all stakeholders of the Unit’s Youth Mobilisation Programme.
As a result, a new practice is emerging in the work of the Unit based on an understanding of accountability and learning that is, in the words of the URSD director, “less about development practitioners becoming ‘accountable to the poor’ and more about all of us becoming jointly accountable to our shared and growing notion of what creates social change.”
